CleanShot X and Snagit Alternatives for OCR on Mac

By Eduard Bruch, developer of Optic · Updated

CleanShot X and Snagit are full screenshot and screen recording tools, and both can also pull text out of the screen. If text capture is the part you actually use, a dedicated OCR app does that part for less. If you use their screenshots, recordings and editors, neither Optic nor any OCR app replaces them.

Short answer: for the text-capture part alone, my pick is Optic: drag a box over any area of the Mac screen and the text or QR code content is on your clipboard, for $4.99, a one-time purchase. Keep CleanShot X or Snagit if you need scrolling captures, annotation, screen recording or cloud links; Optic does none of that. Free alternatives for the OCR part are Live Text and Shottr.

Disclosure: I build Optic, so the pick is my opinion. Competitor details last checked: 2026-10-10, from each vendor's own pages and App Store listings.

Is Optic a fair alternative to CleanShot X or Snagit?

Only for one job. Here is what each does, per its vendor:

CleanShot X alternative for OCR: Optic

If CleanShot X's text recognition is the feature you open it for, Optic is a smaller tool for that one job:

  1. Click the Optic icon in the menu bar and choose Capture Text (or Capture QR Code).
  2. Drag a box over any area of any connected display.
  3. The text, or the decoded QR content, is on your clipboard.
  • Apple's Vision framework on the Mac, 21 languages; the app has no network access, no account and no analytics.
  • Code mode keeps indentation; line breaks can be kept, removed or smart-merged.
  • History of the last 20 captures in the menu bar, with copy again, open link and read aloud.
  • $4.99, a one-time purchase, no subscription; macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

What CleanShot X does that Optic doesn't (cleanshot.com/features, checked 2026-10-10): area, window, fullscreen and scrolling screenshots, screen recording to video and GIF, a full annotation editor (arrows, blur, pixelate, counters, text), floating pinned screenshots, a capture history of up to a month, and cloud sharing with team features. CleanShot X lists "30+ languages" for OCR, more than Optic's 21. If you rely on any of that, keep CleanShot X; its OCR is already included.

Price, as stated by the vendors: CleanShot X Basic is $35 once with one year of updates (optional renewal $19 per year) and Pro is $10 per user per month billed annually (cleanshot.com/pricing); Optic is $4.99 once on the US Mac App Store, both checked 2026-10-10.

Snagit OCR alternative

Snagit's text feature is called Grab Text: in the Capture window you pick Grab Text as the selection type, select an area, and the capture opens in Snagit Editor, where you click Copy All; you can also Control-click an image in the editor and choose Grab Text (TechSmith tutorial "Grab & Edit Text", checked 2026-10-10).

If you open Snagit mostly for that, my pick is Optic: the text goes straight to the clipboard without an editor step, for a one-time $4.99, a one-time purchase. Snagit, per techsmith.com, is a yearly subscription for individuals (the Mac App Store also sells a perpetual Snagit 2024 at $49.99, which the listing says gets support and updates through December 31, 2026).

What Snagit does that Optic doesn't (techsmith.com/snagit, checked 2026-10-10): scrolling capture, screen and webcam recording, Step Capture for guides, Smart Redact, annotation and templates, a searchable capture library, export to PNG, JPG, PDF and MP4, and Windows as well as macOS. If those are why you have Snagit, keep it.

Other alternatives for the OCR part

  • Live Text (free, built into macOS 12 and later): select text in images in Preview, Photos, Quick Look and Safari. It does not work in other apps' windows. More: Mac Live Text limitations.
  • Shottr: a screenshot and annotation app with OCR that "also reads QR codes", free to use, with a one-time licence required for commercial use; macOS 10.15 (shottr.cc, checked 2026-10-10). The closest free CleanShot-style tool.
  • TextSniper and TRex: dedicated screen OCR apps like Optic, at $9.99 and $7.99 on the US Mac App Store (checked 2026-10-10). More: TextSniper alternatives.

How we checked

I read CleanShot X's, TechSmith's and Shottr's own pages and the Mac App Store listings on 2026-10-10, and copied only what they state; I did not test their OCR accuracy or speed. Optic facts come from its code and store listing (facts).
