QR Code Scanner for Mac and Laptops: Which App to Use

By Eduard Bruch, developer of Optic · Updated

A laptop can scan a QR code in two ways: read a code that is shown on its screen (a slide, a web page, a 2FA setup page, a meeting), or read a code held in front of its webcam. Most QR scanner apps for a laptop do one of the two, and a MacBook has no built-in scanner for either, so the right app depends on where your codes are.

Short answer: for a MacBook and codes on the screen, my pick is Optic: a menu bar app that reads the QR code in any area you drag across the screen and copies its content to the clipboard ($4.99, a one-time purchase). For printed codes in front of a Mac's webcam, use a camera scanner app such as QR Capture (free download). On a Windows laptop, the built-in Camera app scans QR codes.

Disclosure: I build Optic, so the pick is my opinion. Third-party details checked 2026-10-10 from each vendor's own page, App Store listing or support article.

This page compares scanner apps. For step-by-step instructions for each situation, see how to scan a QR code on Mac.

Does a Mac laptop have a built-in QR scanner?

Not one we could find. Apple's support article on scanning QR codes covers the Camera app and Code Scanner on iPhone and iPad (support.apple.com/102680, checked 2026-10-10); we found no Apple guide for scanning a QR code with a Mac's own camera or from the Mac screen. Continuity Camera lets an iPhone take a photo or scan a document into a Mac app (support.apple.com/102332), but Apple does not describe it as a QR reader. That is why a MacBook needs either your iPhone or an app.

Best for codes on a Mac screen: Optic

Optic sits in the Mac menu bar. Choose Capture QR Code, drag a box around the code on any connected display, and the decoded content is on your clipboard; links open from the history of your last 20 captures.

  • Reads QR, Micro QR, Aztec, Data Matrix and PDF417 codes on screen. It pads the selection, so a tight box still works.
  • Recognition uses Apple's Vision framework on the Mac; the app has no network access, so a 2FA setup code is not uploaded anywhere.
  • $4.99, a one-time purchase, no subscription; needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Where it does not fit: Optic reads only what is on screen. It does not use the webcam, does not open image files (open them in Preview first) and does not read 1D barcodes (EAN, UPC, Code 128). It is a Mac app, so it is no help on a Windows laptop.

Best for printed codes and a Mac webcam: QR Capture

QR Capture is a free Mac App Store app whose listing says it "scans QR codes (screen, clipboard, file or camera*)", where the camera can be the Mac's webcam or an iPhone; the asterisk is a 7-code limit on camera scans that an in-app purchase removes (App Store listing, checked 2026-10-10). It needs macOS 12.4 per the listing. A built-in laptop camera has a fixed focus, so hold the code where it looks sharp.

Best free open-source screen scanner: qr-scanner

qr-scanner by andrewmkhoury is a free menu bar app on GitHub that scans QR codes "directly from your screen", under the Apache 2.0 licence, for macOS 11 or later (GitHub README, checked 2026-10-10). Good if you want free and do not mind installing from GitHub.

If you already own an OCR or screenshot app

TRex, Shottr, CleanShot X and OwlOCR all say on their own pages that they read QR codes from the screen (see the table for price and macOS). If one is already on your Mac, try it before buying anything. TRex and OwlOCR also mention barcodes. Comparison of all of them: best screen OCR apps for Mac.

No app at all: your phone

Point your iPhone's Camera at the laptop screen and tap the link banner (Apple support article 102680). It costs nothing, but the link opens on the phone, and long codes such as Wi-Fi passwords or 2FA secrets are awkward to get back to the laptop.

On a Windows laptop: the Camera app

Microsoft's support article says the Windows Camera app scans QR codes and barcodes: select the Barcode button, hold the code in front of the camera, and the link appears at the bottom of the app (support.microsoft.com, "How to use the Windows Camera app", checked 2026-10-10). For a code on a Windows screen, Google Lens in Chrome can read an image in a web page, but it sends the image to Google.

How we checked

I read each vendor's page, App Store listing or support article on 2026-10-10 and copied only what they state; I did not test camera scanning speed or accuracy of other apps. Every Optic line comes from its code and store listing (all Optic facts).

FAQ

What is the best QR code scanner for a Mac laptop?

For codes shown on the MacBook's screen, my pick is Optic ($4.99, a one-time purchase); I build it, so treat that as an opinion. For printed codes and the webcam, QR Capture is a free download; for free and open source, qr-scanner on GitHub.

How do I scan a QR code on my laptop?

On a MacBook, use a screen QR app (with Optic: Capture QR Code, drag a box around the code) or point your iPhone's Camera at the screen. On a Windows laptop, open the Camera app and choose Barcode mode. Step by step for Mac: how to scan a QR code on Mac.

How do I scan a QR code on my computer screen?

Use an app that reads the screen. On a Mac, my pick is Optic; qr-scanner (free, GitHub), TRex, Shottr, CleanShot X and OwlOCR also say they read on-screen QR codes. Avoid uploading private codes, such as 2FA setup codes, to web scanners.

Can a MacBook camera scan QR codes?

Not with anything built into macOS that we found in Apple's documentation. A webcam scanner app such as QR Capture can do it. Optic cannot: it reads codes on the screen, not through the camera.

Is there a free QR code scanner for Mac?

Yes: QR Capture (free download, in-app purchase removes the camera limit), qr-scanner (free, open source) and Shottr (free to use). If you scan codes from your screen often, my pick is still Optic at $4.99, a one-time purchase.

Which QR scanner reads barcodes on a laptop?

Optic reads 2D codes (QR, Micro QR, Aztec, Data Matrix, PDF417), not 1D barcodes. TRex and OwlOCR say they read barcodes too, and the Windows Camera app scans barcodes through the webcam.
